Mr. John Battersby, FCInstCES, FGIS, FASI, FCIOB, FHKICM, MRICS, MHKIS, FCMI, FCIArb, FHKIArb, MAE, RPS(QS) is Group Managing Director of BKAsiaPacific Limited and a Registered Professional Quantity Surveyor (Hong Kong) and Chartered Construction Manager having worked in the construction industry for 54 years, 38 years of which have been spent working on projects in Hong Kong, China and South East Asia. John has acted as an expert witness several times, both in arbitration and litigation, in respect of additional cost/loss and expense/damages claims, measurement issues, adjustment of rates, valuation of variations and causes and effects of delays to construction works.  He has acted both as party appointed expert and “single joint expert” (or “tribunal expert”).  He is a Practising Member of the Academy of Experts and accredited by the Academy as an Expert.  He has also been appointed as Arbitrator, Assessor, Adjudicator, Mediator and Dispute Resolution Advisor several times. From his first hand experience of what can go wrong on various building and civil engineering projects, John understands the importance of dispute avoidance through collaborative/cooperative contracting.  He has also worked on target cost contracts utilizing collaborative/cooperative working procedures as well as NEC lump sum and measurement contracts and has conducted numerous seminars and workshops on these subjects.

Mr. Chan Leng Sun SC - Senior Counsel and Chartered Arbitrator, Duxton Hill Chambers, Singapore

Leng Sun is a Senior Counsel of the Supreme Court of Singapore and a Chartered Arbitrator practicing with Duxton Hill Chambers. He is a member of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre Court of Arbitration and the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR. He is formerly the Global Head of Arbitration of an international law firm and President of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb). He is the Deputy Chairman of the SGX Appeals Board. Leng Sun is qualified in Malaysia, Singapore and England. He has a broad commercial practice and has acted as counsel or sat as arbitrator in arbitrations seated in Asia, Europe and USA under ad hoc and institutional rules. Leng Sun had also served as a legal officer of the United Nations Compensation Commission in Geneva. Leng Sun was a lecturer at the National University of Singapore Law School from 1990 to 1993. He started and taught the Arbitration course in the Singapore Management University Law School as an adjunct in 2009 and 2010. Leng Sun is the author of the book, Singapore Law on Arbitral Awards and Co-Editor of Conflict of Laws in Arbitration. Leng Sun is recognized among the top lawyers worldwide by legal directories, such as "Who's Who Thought Leaders – Litigation 2022", "Who's Who Legal - Arbitration 2022” and Acritas Stars 2021. He is described by WWL as being “among the very best disputes lawyers in the world” and lauded as one of ALB Asia’s Super 50 Dispute Lawyers, which reported him to be “spectacular, with exceptional knowledge and depth of insight”.

Graham obtained his first degree in Materials Technology from Coventry Polytechnic and his Masters degree in Advanced Materials Technology from the University of Surrey. He has been a Chartered Engineer since 1991 and is a Professional Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining. After graduation, he spent 10 years with British Aerospace where he was primarily involved with materials development, manufacturing support and aircraft defect investigation. He went on to work for British Airways in 1995 as their company metallurgist and defect investigation specialist before joining Burgoynes in 1998. Graham has investigated over 500 mechanical and materials related cases including aircraft accidents and incidents, marine accidents and losses, road traffic accidents, rail accidents, oil and gas production and pipeline incidents, industrial process plant incidents and power generation turbine failures. He has previously worked in Singapore and has undertaken investigations in the UK, Ireland, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Far East and Australia. He has acted as an Expert Witness and Single Joint Expert in litigation cases and has given expert evidence in civil and criminal court cases, arbitrations and mediations. Graham joined our Leeds office as a Principal Associate in August 2014, and is now based in our office in Singapore.

Gregory’s present practice encompasses a specialisation in banking and corporate insolvency as well as litigation, arbitration and mediation of commercial disputes and chancery matters. He is also a recognised expert in charities governance and has given expert witness testimony for overseas court proceedings. Gregory graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1992, was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 1993 and joined Rajah & Tann LLP after being in practice in two other leading law firms for 15 years (jointly heading the Banking and Insolvency Litigation Practice group of another leading law firm). Gregory was appointed Senior Counsel in 2019. Gregory presently serves as Immediate Past President of the Law Society. He has also been appointed as a Fellow of the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Singapore, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and the Singapore Institute of Directors.
